HERITAGE IN GRAND #15: Kéo quân lantern

In the process of coming up with ideas for the Grand Mercure Hanoi design, our architects always cleverly chose familiar and typical cultural details to incorporate into the spaces of Grand Mercure Hanoi as a welcoming greeting for anyone who comes here. In our Executive Lounge and the foyer area of Trang An Ballroom, eye-catching kéo quân lanterns from the childhood memories of every Vietnamese child on Mid-Autumn Festival are used as the main lighting system, as a way to honor this familiar spiritual gift.

The kéo quân lantern originated from the legendary story of a filial son. Orphaned by his father, he lived with his mother, but when he grew up, he had to work far from home. Feeling sorry for his old mother who was alone at home, he made the kéo quân lantern, simulating a shadow puppet show, to help his old mother feel relieved from missing her son. Therefore, the kéo quân lantern is not only a traditional childhood toy, but also a humane message from our ancestors about filial piety.
