Hanoi, September 25, 2024 – Grand Mercure Hanoi was the first hotel under the Accor group to cooperate with Diversey group to organize a program to recycle coffee grounds into environmentally friendly charcoal briquettes called CoffeeBriques.
CoffeeBriques is an initiative of Mr. Stefan Phang – Global Director of Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility of Diversey Group. While working with clients from hotels and in the food industry, Mr. Stefan experimented pressing coffee grounds into environmentally friendly charcoal briquettes. With the large amount of coffee grounds discharged every day from the hotel and culinary industry, this is an extremely useful initiative because these coffee charcoal briquettes can completely become a clean fuel source for alternative cooking activities which replaces firewood and wood from cutting down trees and deforestation, while also contributing to reducing the amount of waste released into the environment.
As a hotel brand that focus in celebrating local culture, each day, outlets of Grand Mercure Hanoi serve a variety of products from coffee – an iconic drink in Vietnamese culinary culture. With the purpose to make this more meaningful to the community, Grand Mercure Hanoi Hotel has pioneered to become the first hotel of Accor Group in Vietnam to participate in the CoffeeBriques program. Accordingly, Grand Mercure Hanoi will collect coffee grounds and leftover bread from the hotel’s daily culinary business activities and coordinate with the Diversey Group team to recycle them into coffee briques. All coffee briques produced here will be transferred to charity kitchens for the use cooking meals for patients being treated at hospitals in Hanoi.
Mr. Remi Faubel – General Manager of Grand Mercure Hanoi Hotel shared: “We are proud to be the first hotel of the Accor Group in Vietnam to participate in the CoffeeBriques program. This is not just an ordinary recycling project but also a meaningful journey, demonstrating Grand Mercure Hanoi’s commitment to building a green and sustainable hotel brand. We hope that this initiative will inspire many businesses and customers to join hands to protect the environment and support the community.”
On September 25, Grand Mercure Hanoi cooperated with Diversey Group to launch the CoffeeBriques program in the main lobby area of the hotel. Here, Diversey’s team and hotel representatives was demonstrating the process of producing charcoal briquettes from coffee grounds and leftover breadcrumbs, then directly test burning these charcoal briquettes on a BBQ wood stove. Through this event, Grand Mercure Hanoi Hotel spread their sustainability mission and encouraged guests who are using the hotel’s services to be a part of these environmental initiatives.
